Background of the Study

The proliferation of modern retail chains in Surulere has increasingly affected traditional markets, altering consumer behavior and market dynamics. Traditional markets, long-standing centers of community interaction and local trade, now face stiff competition from modern retail outlets that offer standardized products, convenience, and modern amenities (Ajayi, 2023). This shift challenges the sustainability of traditional market structures and calls into question the future of local trading practices (Obi, 2024). While modern retail chains bring benefits such as improved supply chains and competitive pricing, they also threaten to marginalize indigenous vendors and erode cultural practices associated with traditional markets (Ibrahim, 2025). The study investigates the extent to which modern retail has impacted the economic viability, social cohesion, and cultural identity of traditional markets in Surulere. In doing so, it seeks to provide recommendations that balance modernization with the preservation of local trade traditions, ensuring that economic growth does not come at the expense of community heritage.

Statement of the Problem

The expansion of modern retail chains in Surulere has resulted in declining patronage of traditional markets. Indigenous vendors face reduced customer bases, diminished bargaining power, and challenges in adapting to modern retail environments (Ajayi, 2023). These changes have led to economic losses and a potential erosion of cultural trading practices (Obi, 2024). The lack of supportive policies and inadequate adaptation strategies exacerbates the problem, making it essential to evaluate the impact of modern retail on the sustainability of traditional markets (Ibrahim, 2025).

Objectives of the Study:

To assess the impact of modern retail chains on traditional markets.

To evaluate the economic and cultural implications of this shift.

To propose adaptive strategies for traditional vendors.

Research Questions:

How do modern retail chains affect traditional market dynamics in Surulere?

What are the economic impacts on indigenous vendors?

What strategies can traditional markets adopt to remain competitive?

Research Hypotheses:

H₁: Modern retail chains significantly reduce customer patronage in traditional markets.

H₂: The economic viability of traditional vendors is adversely affected by modern retail competition.

H₃: Adaptive strategies can mitigate the negative impacts of modern retail on traditional markets.

Significance of the Study

This study is significant as it examines the transformative effects of modern retail on traditional markets in Surulere. The findings will help local policymakers and market stakeholders develop strategies that preserve cultural heritage while fostering economic competitiveness. The research offers a balanced view of modernization, ensuring that traditional trading practices continue to contribute to community livelihoods (Ajayi, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:

This study is limited to the impact of modern retail chains on traditional markets in Surulere Local Government Area, focusing on local economic and cultural dynamics without addressing broader retail trends.

Definitions of Terms:

Modern Retail Chains: Organized retail outlets offering standardized products.

Traditional Markets: Conventional marketplaces rooted in local trading practices.

Cultural Heritage: The customs and practices that represent a community’s identity.
